OFF-SHORE WIND ENERGY ON THE BALTIC SEA. USEFUL DATA FOR DISCUSSIONS IN GREECE

The sea provides a huge power potential. Over the sea the wind speed and its stability are much higher than over the land.

To obtain 1TWh of electric power a year:

ONSHORE WIND FARMS OFFSHORE WINDFARMS
Area required 100km2 Area required 60km2
Installation of 400MW Installation of 250 MW

The construction of offshore wind farms faces bigger problems i.e. for foundations, underwater cables, costly, etc.
Overall since the electricity production is higher in offshore installations the idea is attractive and it is needed immediately local government to establish clear rules and laws for private investors.
